Percentages & decimals: 11 Plus maths practice

Percentages of amounts, discounts, and FDP conversions.

CoreIn almost every paper that tests this subjectAbout 60 seconds a question in the test

The big idea

“Per cent” means “out of 100”. 10% is one tenth, 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter, 1% is one hundredth.

Build tricky percentages from easy ones: 35% = 10% + 10% + 10% + 5%.

Tips that save marks

  • Learn the key equivalents: 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%, 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5%.
  • For a discount, find the percentage then subtract it from the original.
  • Read carefully: “reduced BY 20%” vs “reduced TO 20%”.

A worked example

Find 35% of 80.

  1. 10% of 80 = 8.
  2. 30% = 24; 5% = 4.
  3. 35% = 24 + 4 = 28.

Now try five

Try each one before you look at the answer: answering from memory is what makes it stick. Tap an option to check it. Most children get three or four right at first; five out of five means move on to the next topic.

Question 1Aim for about 60 seconds

Write 3/4 as a percentage.

Show the worked answer

Answer: C, 75%

How to work it out

  1. 3/4 = 0.75 as a decimal.
  2. Multiply by 100 to get 75%.
Question 2Aim for about 60 seconds

Which list is in order from smallest to largest?

710 0.65 68%

Show the worked answer

Answer: C, 0.65, 68%, 710

How to work it out

  1. Change them all to the same form, such as decimals: 710 = 0.7, 0.65 = 0.65, 68% = 0.68.
  2. Smallest to largest: 0.65, 68%, 710.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (68%, 710, 0.65): Compare them as decimals (710 = 0.7, 0.65 = 0.65, 68% = 0.68): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • B (710, 0.65, 68%): Compare them as decimals (710 = 0.7, 0.65 = 0.65, 68% = 0.68): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • D (710, 68%, 0.65): Compare them as decimals (710 = 0.7, 0.65 = 0.65, 68% = 0.68): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • E (0.65, 710, 68%): Compare them as decimals (710 = 0.7, 0.65 = 0.65, 68% = 0.68): this list is not smallest to largest.
Question 3Aim for about 60 seconds

What is 10% of 580?

Show the worked answer

Answer: D, 58

How to work it out

  1. Find 10% first: 580 ÷ 10 = 58.
  2. Build 10% from that: 58.
Question 4Aim for about 60 seconds

What is 10% of 890,000?

Show the worked answer

Answer: B, 89,000

How to work it out

10% of 890,000 is 89,000.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (178,000): This doubles the answer.
  • C (89,010): A near miss: check the working again.
  • D (801,000): This is what is left after taking 10% away.
  • E (890,000): This is ten times too big: the answer has one digit too many.
Question 5Aim for about 60 seconds

Which list is in order from smallest to largest?

25 0.45 35%

Show the worked answer

Answer: E, 35%, 25, 0.45

How to work it out

  1. Change them all to the same form, such as decimals: 25 = 0.4, 0.45 = 0.45, 35% = 0.35.
  2. Smallest to largest: 35%, 25, 0.45.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (25, 0.45, 35%): Compare them as decimals (25 = 0.4, 0.45 = 0.45, 35% = 0.35): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • B (0.45, 35%, 25): Compare them as decimals (25 = 0.4, 0.45 = 0.45, 35% = 0.35): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • C (25, 35%, 0.45): Compare them as decimals (25 = 0.4, 0.45 = 0.45, 35% = 0.35): this list is not smallest to largest.
  • D (0.45, 25, 35%): Compare them as decimals (25 = 0.4, 0.45 = 0.45, 35% = 0.35): this list is not smallest to largest.
