The big idea

Word classes: nouns name, verbs act, adjectives describe nouns, adverbs describe verbs, pronouns replace nouns, prepositions show position, conjunctions join.

Homophones sound the same but mean different things: their/there/they’re, its/it’s, to/too/two, affect/effect.

Tips that save marks

  • A word’s class depends on how it is used in the sentence.
  • Try expanding contractions: if “it is” fits, use “it’s”.
  • Check subject-verb agreement: “The group of pupils IS…”.

Now try five

Try each one before you look at the answer: answering from memory is what makes it stick. Tap an option to check it. Most children get three or four right at first; five out of five means move on to the next topic.
