How to prepare
The Medway Test covers maths, verbal reasoning and English. Most families start steady preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, building accuracy first and speed later, then sit timed papers through the summer before the test, which usually takes place in September.
For maths, secure the Key Stage 2 arithmetic, fractions, ratio and problem solving before moving to the multi-step questions that separate the strongest candidates.
For English, read widely every day and practise comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar; selective tests reward precise word knowledge.
Verbal reasoning is a set of learnable question types, such as letter codes, hidden words and word analogies. Learning each type, then practising it against the clock, lifts scores quickly.
This test includes a piece of writing, so practise planning and writing a short story or description in a set time.
Practice questions in the style of the test

Question 1Aim for about 60 seconds
On a map, 1 cm stands for 3 km. Two villages are 3 cm apart on the map. How far apart are they in real life?
Show the worked answer
Answer: B, 9 km
How to work it out
Each centimetre is 3 km, so 3 cm is 3 × 3 = 9 km.
Why the other options are wrong
A (1 km): This divides by the scale; it should multiply.
C (10 km): A near miss: check the working again.
D (90 km): One zero too many.
E (6 km): This adds the numbers; each centimetre is worth the scale.
Question 2Aim for about 35 seconds
If DESK is written in code as ABPH, what is the code for RAIN?
Show the worked answer
Answer: D, OXFK
How to work it out
Compare DESK with its code: each letter moves 3 places back in the alphabet.
Do the same to RAIN: OXFK.
Question 3Aim for about 45 seconds
Which part has a spelling mistake? Choose “No mistake” if there is none.
Show the worked answer
Answer: A, During the competishun,
How to work it out
“competishun” should be spelt “competition”.
Why the other options are wrong
B (Aisha’s team answered): Every word in this part is spelt correctly.
C (every question): Every word in this part is spelt correctly.
D (correctly and won.): Every word in this part is spelt correctly.
E (No mistake): There is a mistake: “competishun” should be spelt “competition”.
