How to prepare

The Kent Test covers maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Most families start steady preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, building accuracy first and speed later, then sit timed papers through the summer before the test, which usually takes place in September.

For maths, secure the Key Stage 2 arithmetic, fractions, ratio and problem solving before moving to the multi-step questions that separate the strongest candidates.

For English, read widely every day and practise comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar; selective tests reward precise word knowledge.

Verbal reasoning is a set of learnable question types, such as letter codes, hidden words and word analogies. Learning each type, then practising it against the clock, lifts scores quickly.

Non-verbal reasoning is about spotting patterns in shapes: rotations, reflections, sequences and matrices. Short, regular sessions work better than long ones.

This test includes a piece of writing, so practise planning and writing a short story or description in a set time.

Practice questions in the style of the test

Question 1Aim for about 60 seconds

Calculate:

182 − 60 ÷ 6

Show the worked answer

Answer: C, 172

How to work it out

  1. Divide before you subtract (BIDMAS): 60 ÷ 6 = 10.
  2. Then 182 − 10 = 172.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (182): A near miss: check the working again.
  • B (10): This is only 60 ÷ 6; it still has to be taken from 182.
  • D (122): This subtracts 60 and forgets to divide it by 6.
  • E (192): This adds instead of subtracting.
Question 2Aim for about 45 seconds

Which word is spelt incorrectly?

Show the worked answer

Answer: A, persue

How to work it out

“persue” should be spelt “pursue”. pur, like purse: pur-sue.

Question 3Aim for about 35 seconds

Three of these words go together. Which two words do not belong with them?

hexagon, rhombus, square, swan, heron

Show the worked answer

Answer: E, swan and heron

How to work it out

rhombus, square, hexagon are all shapes. heron and swan are birds.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (rhombus and heron): rhombus belongs with the shapes; only heron and swan do not.
  • B (square and swan): square belongs with the shapes; only heron and swan do not.
  • C (rhombus and square): These are both shapes, like hexagon.
  • D (hexagon and heron): hexagon belongs with the shapes.
Question 4Aim for about 45 seconds

Which of the shapes below could join this group?

The group

Show the worked answer

Answer: D

How to work it out

  1. Every shape in the group has the same number of dots as it has sides.
  2. Shading and rotation change freely, so they are distractors.
