Question 4Aim for about 45 seconds

Which two pieces fit together, with no gaps or overlaps, to make the shape shown? The pieces may be turned.

Show the worked answer

Answer: C

How to work it out

  1. The hexagon has been cut top to bottom into two halves.
  2. Only one pair of pieces has the right two halves at the right size; the others are halves of a different shape, two copies of the same half, or too small.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: One piece is half of the hexagon, but the other is half of a house: their edges do not meet.
  • B: These two pieces make a kite, not the hexagon.
  • D: One piece is half of the hexagon, but the other is half of a kite: their edges do not meet.
  • E: These are the right two halves but too small: together they make a hexagon smaller than the one shown.

Show the worked answer

Answer: A

How to work it out

  2. Only one pair of pieces has the right two halves at the right size; the others are halves of a different shape, two copies of the same half, or too small.

Why the other options are wrong

  • C: One piece is half of the cross, but the other is half of a kite: their edges do not meet.

Hidden, but turned

The shape is in one design turned a quarter, a half or three quarters, never flipped.

Standard
Question 8Aim for about 45 seconds

The shape on the left is hidden in one of the designs, the same size but turned. It is never flipped over. Which design?

Show the worked answer

Answer: A

How to work it out

  1. Turn the shape in your head a quarter, a half and three quarters, then look for each version.
  2. One design holds a turned copy; the designs with a mirror image or a missing side do not count.

Why the other options are wrong

  • B: Close, but one side of the turned shape is missing from this design.
  • C: This design hides a mirror image of the shape. A turn never flips a shape over, so this is not it.
  • D: One side is missing here too; every side of the shape has to be present.
  • E: This one holds the shape flipped over and then turned; flipping is not allowed, only turning.

The design that does not have it

Four designs hide the shape the same way up; one does not.

Standard
Question 9Aim for about 45 seconds

The shape on the left is hidden in four of the designs, the same size and the same way up. Which design does NOT contain it?

  2. The odd design holds a turned or mirrored copy, which does not count: the shape must be the same way up.

Why the other options are wrong

  • B: The shape is in design B, the same size and the same way up: start at one of its corners and follow every side.
  • C: The shape is in design C, the same size and the same way up: start at one of its corners and follow every side.
  • D: The shape is in design D, the same size and the same way up: start at one of its corners and follow every side.
  • E: The shape is in design E, the same size and the same way up: start at one of its corners and follow every side.
