Question 1Aim for about 60 seconds

What is the range of these numbers?

14, 3, 11, 12, 9, 3

Show the worked answer

Answer: E, 11

How to work it out

Range = largest − smallest = 14 − 3 = 11.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (21): This is 10 more than the correct answer, so the tens column is out. Recheck the working.
  • B (12): This is one more than 14 − 3.
  • C (3): This is the smallest number; the range is largest minus smallest.
  • D (14): This is the largest number; the range is largest minus smallest.
Question 2Aim for about 60 seconds

What is the mode of these numbers?

14, 15, 6, 15, 9, 14, 15

Show the worked answer

Answer: D, 15

How to work it out

The mode is the number that appears most often: 15 appears 3 times.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (3): This is how many times 15 appears; the mode is the number itself.
  • B (5): This is 10 less than the correct answer, so the tens column is out. Recheck the working.
  • C (6): This is the smallest number, not the one that appears most often.
  • E (14): This is 1 less than the correct answer, so the last step of the working is out by one.

Question 3Aim for about 60 seconds

The line graph shows the temperature in a garden. What was the temperature at 4 pm?

0246810121416182022248 am10 am12 pm2 pm4 pm6 pmTime of dayTemperature (°C)
Show the worked answer

Answer: D, 5°C

How to work it out

  1. Find 4 pm on the bottom axis, go up to the line, then across to the scale: 5°C.
  2. Each gridline is 2 degrees.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (4°C): The point is halfway between two gridlines: read the value in the middle.
  • B (6°C): Read across carefully: each gridline is 2 degrees, not 1.
  • C (3°C): One gridline too low.
  • E (1°C): This reads the next time along.
Question 4Aim for about 60 seconds

What is the range of these numbers?

13, 1, 8, 14

Show the worked answer

Answer: E, 13

How to work it out

Range = largest − smallest = 14 − 1 = 13.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (26): This is double the correct answer, 13. Check whether you doubled when you should not have.
  • B (14): This is the largest number; the range is largest minus smallest.
  • C (9): This is the mean of the numbers, not the range.
  • D (3): This is 10 less than the correct answer, so the tens column is out. Recheck the working.

Question 5Aim for about 60 seconds

What is the median of these numbers?

26, 21, 36, 28, 20, 25

Show the worked answer

Answer: E, 25.5

How to work it out

  1. Put them in order: 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 36.
  2. There is an even count, so the median is halfway between the middle two: (25 + 26) ÷ 2 = 25.5.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (25.0): This is only the lower of the two middle numbers; the median is halfway between them.
  • B (26.5): This is 1.0 more than the correct answer, so the tens column is out. Recheck the working.
  • C (26.0): This is only the higher of the two middle numbers; the median is halfway between them.
  • D (25.4): This is 0.1 less than the correct answer. No common slip leads to it, so recheck the working.
Question 6Aim for about 60 seconds

Aisha records how many coins go into a money box each day. On Saturday there were 2 more coins than on Tuesday. How many symbols would Aisha draw for Saturday?

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday= 2 coins
Show the worked answer

Answer: C, 4.5

How to work it out

  1. Tuesday shows 3.5 symbols, and each symbol stands for 2 coins: 7 coins.
  2. Saturday: 7 + 2 = 9 coins.
  3. 9 ÷ 2 = 4.5 symbols.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (9): This is the number of coins, not symbols. Divide by the key.
  • B (3.5): This is Tuesday; Saturday had 2 more coins.
  • D (5.5): This adds 2 symbols instead of 2 coins.
