Question 12Aim for about 60 seconds
How many 1/4s are there in 5?
Show the worked answer
Answer: A, 20
How to work it out
There are 4 lots of 1/4 in every whole, so in 5 wholes there are 5 × 4 = 20.
Why the other options are wrong
B (9): This adds 5 + 4; each whole holds 4 lots of 1/4, so multiply.
C (24): This is 4 too many; there are 5 wholes of 4 each.
D (5): This is the number of wholes; each whole holds 4 of them.
E (16): This is 4 too few; there are 5 wholes of 4 each.
