Sutton SET and the Nonsuch and Wallington second stage

Nonsuch and Wallington High School for Girls use the Sutton SET in September of Year 6 (multiple choice English and maths, about 40 to 50 minutes each), then their own joint second stage at the end of September. That has two written papers of about 40 to 50 minutes: maths, where only the final answer is marked, and English, which is a piece of writing on a set subject. There is no comprehension paper at the second stage.

Test setters rarely publish how many questions a paper has, so the question counts are the length of Prism’s practice papers; timings follow the setter’s published guidance where there is any. Arrangements change from year to year: always check them with the school or local authority.

How to prepare for the SET Sutton (girls)

The Sutton SET and the Nonsuch and Wallington second stage covers maths and English. Most families start steady preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, building accuracy first and speed later, then sit timed papers through the summer before the test, which usually takes place in September.

For maths, secure the Key Stage 2 arithmetic, fractions, ratio and problem solving before moving to the multi-step questions that separate the strongest candidates.

For English, read widely every day and practise comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar; selective tests reward precise word knowledge.

This test includes a piece of writing, so practise planning and writing a short story or description in a set time.

Some answers are written, not chosen, so practise without options to fall back on: write the number or the words yourself, show the working where the paper asks for it, and check each answer against the question.

Question 1Aim for about 60 seconds

Point P is translated 4 squares right and 3 squares up. What are the coordinates of its new position?

112233445566778899xy0P
Show the worked answer

Answer: A, (8, 7)

How to work it out

Right adds to the x-coordinate and up adds to the y-coordinate: (4 + 4, 4 + 3) = (8, 7).

Why the other options are wrong

  • B ((8, 1)): This moves down instead of up.
  • C ((0, 7)): This moves left instead of right.
  • D ((9, 7)): The x-coordinate is 1 too big: 9 is 4 + 4 + 1.
  • E ((7, 8)): The two moves have been mixed up: the first number is along, the second is up or down.
Question 2Aim for about 45 seconds

Which sentence is punctuated correctly?

Show the worked answer

Answer: D, "Where are you going?" asked Sam.

How to work it out

  1. The correct sentence is: "Where are you going?" asked Sam.
  2. Speech marks go round the words spoken, with the punctuation inside them.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A (Where are you going? asked Sam.): The speech marks are missing, so nothing shows which words Sam spoke.
  • B ("Where are you going" asked Sam?): The question mark has moved to the end. It belongs after “going”, inside the speech marks, because the spoken words ask the question.
  • C ("Where are you going?", asked Sam.): A comma is added after the question mark. The spoken question already has its own mark, so no comma is needed.
